Moelfre in February?

Took the littl'un out this afternoon and headed over to Anglesey. Strictly no fishing today, it was a kind of day out / fishing mark survey rolled into one

BTW I'm a complete Anglesey novice but curiosity has been getting the better of me lately. Didn't have anywhere particular in mind and picked up signs for Amlwch just after we passed over the Britannia bridge. Before long we were approaching Moelre then decided to take a stop. We found a free car park at the Seawatch Centre and took a stroll from there, walking left along the coastal path...



... and headed for the lifeguard station



On the other side there are several easy access rock marks...





... and a short stretch of open pebble beach

Then another good rocky outreach beyond the pebble beach, just opposite the small island which sits about 300~400m or so off shore



This whole place struck me as a great place to fish and think I'd like to try here soon. I know Big Kev has already posted Moelfre on the venues section but I'm interested in finding out if anyone knows whether is it worth fishing at this time of year or is it more of just a summer / mackerel venue? Also, if using standard beach tactics, are there any particularly good / bad marks, assuming this area being rocky ground is likley to be very snaggy in places? Or would I just be better off waiting to return in summer armed with light gear - float, lures, etc.?

Hi Joe, excellent for mackerel to stock your freezer up in summer but generally full of feather chuckers, there are the usual suspects in summer, wrasse, dogs, conger, never fished this time of year, may be some conger to bag. In the summer the water is fizzing with mackerel some evenings and your arms hurt you can drag that many mack in. Plenty of seals knocking about usually.

Nice report Joe. What Pete said is spot on. Very snaggy and weedy as you come to the lifeboat station.

Crackin pics laaaaaaaaaaa....should imagine you`d get the obligatory dogs n whiting at this time of year....worth a go for the scenery

I had a look at a spring low and the bottom was awfull!!

Tackle losses V fish? hmmm.

I'd resolved to stick to a float or spinner in that area, also as has already been mentioned getting a space in summer amongst the mack fishers will be a problem.

I'm no expert but I'd try the marks around Almwch or perhaps a bit further ad park here:

Theres the beach at the bottom of the pick, with two fishing spots, one clean, the other snaggy (bottom of pic).

Ot fish off the rocks toward the top of the pick, a bit hard going but clean reasonably deep ground.

Theres also a coastal path - nice views etc along here, with really deep water and more fishing, fantastic views than you can point a stick at:

From the main rock platforms looking straight out to the island, casting from 1 right around to 3 puts you in clear ground. As kev said, dogs and whiting. I was pulling whiting in on feathers last year end of september.

Not worth float fishing, nowt there against the rocks. Don't believe all you might read. You can get the very odd pollack casting more 12 to 11 to the island, but its shallower water, none will be in size and you'll lose tackle.

Chaos during summer and 3 seals work the area, they make good sport on a light spinning rod

Also state of the litter is very bad, i always litter pick it if i go in summer (typically getting 2 carrier bags full), hoping that the (rest!) of the noddies get the message.

I was following signs for Almwch that day but decided to cut it short at Moelfe. We'll at least I know where to go for macky in summer but think I'll keep going next next and give Almwch a shot when I actually go to do some serious fishing.
