what reel should i buy
what reel should i buy
After many years of fishing using fixed spool i`m thinking of investing in a multiplier.
What middle of the road, easy to handle multiplier do you reckon i should get.??
I had a old intrepid sea streak many years ago and spent most night fishing picking out birds nests.
i know technology has improved 200% since so any advice would be appreciated

Buy an Abu 6500 mag or an Akios sportscast. Both are great reels and you will have no trouble getting to grips with them.

I started on a second hand penn 525 mag off ebay and still love it. Great distance, strong and very controllable with mags on. I've just upgraded to the Akios sportscast after reading the postings on here. What a fantastic reel, distance, control, tough and looks the bis. Expensive at £165 but it'll last a lifetime and hard to beat. Had problems with my Diawa 7ht mag so the Akios is now the first reel out the bag. Whatever you do by a good quality one nobody wants to buy a cheap second hand reel and you'll be stuck with it. Hope this helps. Put the Akios on you Christmas list you never know

lots of whiting, poor cod,codling

A Penn 525 mag is not the reel to start off with when you are new to multis. They can be a bit of a handful even to experienced casters.Stick with what has been suggested and you won't go wrong.niges123 wrote:I started on a second hand penn 525 mag off ebay and still love it. Re: what reel should i buy
I'd always go for a penn 525 mag, significantly more durable and flexible than abu 6500. Got the cranking power and strength for rough ground, but low enough and light enough to be a pleasure to use for day to day fishing.
Mags on full no problem even as a begginer out of the box. You could get a fast reel if you buy the old vanilla penn 525 mag second hand where the previous owner has not lubed the bearings or has lubed it with a very thin oil and/or has taken out some of the mags.
The later model 525 mags had more magnets in you really wont get into any trouble with them - there are quite a few floating around - MAg Extra, Mag 2, SuperMag etc. All of them are very forgiving.
Soz Steve, keep disagreeing with you lately

Make a difference - take home 1 piece of someone's angling litter next time you are out fishing.
Re: what reel should i buy
Thanks Graham glad you agree with me. We all have different opinions Steve and the fact that we share them on here makes the site all the better for it. The Penn worked for me as a first multi as I read up on it and really took my time. It's got to be one of the best multi purpose multis. Yes there were a few "nests" early on but as soon as I got to grips with the magnets settings, all was fine. Besides "getting to grips with it" was part of the challenge/fun for me. Go for it "halfprice" you won't be sorry and if it does fail you, and Steve Duffy's correct, you can probably get what you paid for it on ebay.

I would defo go for a Penn 525mag or 515mag as a first multi. Very easy to use and set up. And the best thing is it won't s**t the bed when you get a good fish on and a load of weed.

I started with the 525 mag xtra new off ebay,,cheap and does the job well, very well built just have the mag on full when you first start.merseyboy wrote:I would defo go for a Penn 525mag or 515mag as a first multi. I do still use it for rocky or snaggy places.
