Another new rod question - which long rod?

Is bite detection really that important I`d rather have a rod that allows me to put a bait where the fish are,if distance is the key,rather than one which leaves my bait short.For most cases,any fish worth reeling in will give you some sort of bite.....the rig can make a big difference to bite registration rather than the rod. I`ve used rods with "good bite detection" but hardly seen an interest when using long up n over rigs for rays e.t.c. A light,well balanced rod with a good casting capability would be more important to me than bite detection.

My sister in law has a fish business and has a factory that cooks/shells and potts shrimp and they do become more scarce in the colder months. I've done ok with my push net at Formby but will give it a go this Friday at Ainsdale. Like the other lads it's another enjoyable part of sea fishing and amazing looking at the all the other stuff you catch. Last year I had loads of juvenile flatties about 2 inches long and some looked like small turbot, got me thinking about a marine aquarium.

There was a fair few shrimp at Moreton gutter the other week when I was having a mooch about.

Have you seen the price of cooked and shelled brown shrimp, was about 50 quid a kilo

Reactionrec (Colin Agnew) had a sea water tank and it was fascinating....he had a few crabs in it,and when we went crabbing he`d find small butterfish e.t.c and put them in....something i`d love to do.

As far as I'm concerned most sea fish hook themselves.If the rod tip moves I wind in.How often have you struck at a bite and brought in a fish that is hooked anywhere but in the mouth.It is because they have been attacking the bait probably from the side or attacking a trailing part of the bait before its actually in the fishes mouth.

Tony, as you know it's a lot of effort and I don't think I could ever make much money doing it but I agree it is enjoyable and time well spent. We had the last pot of shrimps as a starter tonight and could happily have some more soon.When I've seen them in supermarkets etc they are about £4 for a 2oz pot. Thanks for the tip about Moreton it might save a bit of a walk so I might give it a try this week. Those little flatties would look great in an aquarium, when I was coarse fishing I had a tank and a pond in the garden stocked with fish from a nearby canal but the highlight for me was to come down the stairs one day to see a mallard swimming around and making itself at home.

Kev, the attraction of a long rod and fixed spool for me is to make life easy. The main attraction and advantage i can see of fishing that style is on the beaches in the dark in winter, it seems pretty foolproof ,no birdsnests or thumbing the spool too early, no looking down with a head torch trying to lay the line right for the next cast etc if anything it could improve my distances (cos I'm not a great caster) and is maybe easier than the traditional set up. I'm not out to win matches so bite detection from small fish isn't too crucial but as Brian has said these rods are light enough to hold if it is important. I hope I see a tool that does a job better than what I've got so I reckon it's got to be worth a try.

Watch this space there could always be a nearly new rod for sale if I'm wrong

Ian i bet you are now thinking that you had more of an idea before you started this thread.
big problem on fishing sites like this is with loads of active members is that every one has their own opinion and you end up not knowing which way to turn.
only advice i can still give as i have already said it all depends on the fishing sessions you intend to use it for / as i only pleasure fish and not match fish.
so its wrong of me to tell you about long rod setups if this is what you want as i don't use them or need them.
The need for casting distance is not needed in 90% of my fishing as the only time i fish during daylight is on the rock marks again no need for excessive distance .
with pleasure fishing the most important thing to me is the sport of playing fish on an outfit to equal the fishes powers so i don't really know how we can all help with out giving you more of a head banging read / I can only say it again its only yourself you need to please and not others.

As Richie can testify I'm quite partial to a snooze on a warm day so a bell could be more effective than a new rod at improving my catch rate

To end the saga I'm now a proud owner of a second hand Yuki Q7. A big thanks to Ashley for pointing me in the right direction and to Steve for his help putting it all together.

I won't get the rod until next weekend and I know the match anglers have moved on a bit but I've had a few chucks with Steves and for a duffer like me it's plenty good enough.

I have the Yuki Taylor Q6, which to me is an awesome rod. Bite detection with the spliced tip is something else and like others have said you can hit good distances easily.
I have been after the Yuki Taylor Q7 for quite a while (ask Steve Duffy) and now I have just acquired one I have not used it yet, but going by the Q6, I won't be disappointed.



So I have both at the moment. There might be a Yuki Q6 for sale shortly....see how they compare

I was with Steve the other day and he said that you'd got one at last. I've used mine a few times over the winter, had a few cod and am really pleased but it's the next couple of months on the beaches that I'm hoping to put it to full use.

When you've used it a bit let us know what you think and also how it compares to the Q6.

After whispering sands post and merseyboys questions I looked back at previous posts on similair themes and there are quite few interesting ones but I've got a confession to make........

Last week in fuerte I did actually use a bell on each rod tip sometimes. You are basically looking for one or two bites from the big stuff, so to me it seemed logical to lie on the beach and snooze a bit while waiting, I reckoned it's pretty much the same as a bite alarm in carp fishing so it should be allowed?...... and it did work once
