Mostyn With Ste Atkinson 03/03/2024

An icy start for me and a slippy drive with it being -1.5c at 5:30am.
I and Ste chose Mostyn to spend half a Sunday on the calmest still waters of the dropping tide. As you can see in the pictures it was a fantastic day to be fishing.
We were getting bites from the off with no connecting fish. I reeled in 3 crabs in 3 casts.
Then Ste worked on the fish and found a 28cm Dab and a Whiting.
I moved closer to the water with tripod and rods which turned out to a good call from Ste
I made this pennel rig up with a size 1 aberdeen and a 1/0 circle top hook and cast in rag once then decided to cast in closer using the fresh lug and a bit of rag still left on.
I got a solid few pull downs within five minutes of it being in the water. We got excited something decent was biting.
I left it for a reasonable amount of time and tightened the slack the fish was making. I reeled in in little jolts to spur the fish on.
Then I hit into a heavy Plaice and Ste ran down with his new net but I managed to lift the fish out of the water with the rod.
It went 40.5cm and 1.5lb.
Best Mostyn Plaice I've had and also biggest late winter Plaice I've ever caught

We had the odd bite and the tide turned moving our leads far right. So we called it a day 12.
I met Ste at Mcdonalds for a coffee and a wrap which made me feel less tired. We also met by chance again in the morning there each having a coffee and a breakfast wrap (chunky wraps)

I would suggest that crabs are responsible for the false bites.Mostyn has always suffered from a rampant crab population.

Some of them were crabs for certain but some of them were definitely fish. As they were much more aggressive bites and there were whiting and dabs present as well as plaice

I have had crab bites which pulled the rod out of the rest.

well done getting out lads nice early plaice for you tom could be a good year for them showing in good numbers up the north west coast

That's my best from Mostyn ever so good start. Going for a 2lb plus on peeler this spring summer and autumn

Great to see all your reports and that the spotties are in at Mostyn. I had my pb Plaice pretty close to where you were a couple of years back in spring on peeler, report is on here somewhere. Mostyn throws up some belting plaice at this time of year.
