Whatever happened to booms??

When I was a kid and used to fish on north pier and gynn wall etc, everybody used to use booms. Now I know they dont cast very well but they used to catch serious amounts of fish. With the introduction of modern gear everybody seem to be obsessed with distance and booms seem to have disappeared off the scene. What does everyone think about booms, is there still a place for them in modern fishing?

i no of a couple of people who still swear by booms from time to time. espeacially for whiting. goes back to what your comfortable with in the end.

fishing short range for whiting an dabs id never be without booms ash. i use the gemini ones witch incorparate a tiny bait clip which makes rig very stream lined

i've still got loads of booms from when i was a kid, i must take them to antiques road show, Who remembers 3 boom paternosters?

I have just tied some rigs with booms a 2 hook clip down and a pennel have used them in the past and found good for flaties so hopeing that using them clipped down wont be to much problem to cast

were they the patanosters were the three booms were all linked by wire no nylon apart from snoods

;)still used . great on the boat ash and one single boom about 4inch above your lead with 12 inch snood was the best for scratching around when fish were scarce.

I remember being sold some wire booms by Chris at MAC when I first arrived over here from 'The Old Country' (Yorkshire)

Strange I thought....... but bowed to local knowledge

I used them once and then sacked them off because of the constant tangling when I tried to get a bit of distance at Caldy.

Maybe worth a go at Seacombe or Perch Rock on a very low tide?

Small twisted wire metal booms are often used by match anglers to pin a bait on the bottom but most uses for booms to reduce tangles tend not to work very well unless you use the clipped type.
The little plastic ashpole booms always seemed useless to me but they are very popular with some.

the small twisted ones are great for sole when a delicate bait needs pinning the bottom

If anybody has got a couple of these I would be interested. Caught, on a night tide, over 60 dabs, whiting and codling using one of these off North Pier Blackpool in the 1960's. All on size 2 Mustad whiting hooks with lug and black as bait. Ah happy days !
