I don't think that many people fish at the "Shaws Arms" end of the stretch.
Those that park at that end usually walk all the way upstream to church deeps, but I don't think that many people do that either.....there was rumors of cars getting vandalised at one time. Church deeps does still
produce good fish though.
What J.P. said about the size of fish has some truth in it. The majority of the chub are over 3lbs, and the barbel probably average 6lbs......about 1 in 5 or 6 will push double figures. When you are catching fish of this size,
you don't get 10 or 12 fish in a session. The best I've had from there is 8 fish in 4 1/2hrs. I have found that short evening sessions are the most productive, and if you do get several fish in one hit, they tend to be smaller fish, with maybe one of them a bigger fish. My largest barbel from there to date, 11lbs 14ozs, was the first of only two bites in 4 hrs, but I think you'll agree that the wait was worthwile, for a fish of that calibre. (I'll try to scan a piccy and upload it....if I can find it!)
That fish was taken in September.....I'd like to catch it again in early march, it could even get to 13 1/2 or 14lbs at that time of year.
I believe that the Ribble record from last winter(14lbs 06ozs i think) was caught very near to this stretch.....so the chance of a real biggy is well on the cards.

I won a match on the section below church deeps which I knew as barton flats (aka cyanide straight) with 46lb of chub on good old wag & bronze maggot but I seriously doubt there is 46lb of coarse fish between there and the sea these days,I am afraid the "black death" has all but wiped it out but it may still hold some big fish like the rest of the Ribble up to Ribchester.

shotgun patrol sounds better shaky pike eat fish , shotguns kill "the black death" plus when your not fishing you can hold up the building society especially with xmas only round the corner kids want a lot more these days
