Sounds like good advice, practice and try different things out. Your point about leads- I've only used grip leads so far. I should use other leads too? Why? I thought you needed your lead to grip and hold bottom?

As for tides, bloke at New Brighton fishing shop said you don't catch well in big tides as the fish won't fight the tides. True or not? I thought big tides big fish though I have noticed fish started biting when the water went calm. Can you predict where the fish will be depending on the state of the tide i.e. big or small?

Few things..

1) Without the grips that the lead roles on the bottom, covering more area in the process and also finding and stopping in any holes and channels on the sea bed. Doesnt really apply to the main channels of the mersey imo. But its good for floudering and bassing in smaller estuaries and beaches etc.

2) No grips there becomes some point to striking and you get a better feel of the fish when you get bites.

3) Fish less spooked when they grab a bait that isnt heavily anchored to the bottom.

Thats in order of importance. 3 is very questionable.

Regards big tides, I wouldnt say its a load of rubbish but it is inaccurate in many situations. Basically cod like a good run, whereas the flatties much prefer a gentle flow, whiting arnt choosey. Also during a strong flow crab activity falls right off, meaning you have a good bait in the water for longer.

The main frustrating with big tides is all the carp you get on the line and holding bottom.

So there is no right or wrong answer i'm afraid. Just experience knowing what tide you can get away with fishing on with the tackle you have available. Even experienced anglers make the wrong call sometimes.

Experience is the answer. Its best to go and try all situations just because someone didn't catch dose not mean you can't

Thats the way forward - what works for some doesnt seem to for others - get out and fish

Gimme a time and a place when you're next going fishing and I'll make a few different rigs and pop them down to you.You can then keep them and copy them yourself. I'll also show you how to bait a pennel etc.
