float fishing

need help!!! i was fishing on canal at stoke and was using rod and reel but i couldnt get the float to sit still kept trotting down the canal!! i tried going overdepth with a couple of shot on the bottom but nothing would keep it still!! any ideas???

Not a lot you can do when there`s a tow on the cut....you can try going over depth and putting shot on the deck,but your main line is always gunna get dragged to a degree

Best way to combat the pull on that part of the canal is to use a small float link leger set up as shown here.



It is not always a good thing to have the bait sitting still.The fish are used to having food moving in the direction of the flow.They are more likely to be suspicious of a still bait.

as steve says,but you can always put a shot about a foot above the float too sink the line, and put the rod tip under the water, this worked for me

depends wether it is surface tow caused by the wind or the water is actually flowing Let me know which one it is

Use a pole and backshot your float to get your line under the skim. Get your bulk as close to the deck as possible. If necessary, lay on, up to a foot in really bad tow. Using a heavy bait helps. When tow is bad, I often use chopped worm( fed with a baitdropper), but this is usually on commercials.

On the Shroppy it is usually flow caused by the locks opening, but as I've said elsewhere don't worry too much about trying to hold the float in one place.

Kev, that is exactly why I would use the pole. Anyway, I didnt know people still used waggler rods. I thought you would be in Wales Kev, or has the missus finally worn you down

I use my waggler rod every now and then when i cant be botherd The tactics ash is talking about can be used with a rod aslo... just use AAA instead of size 8 A moving bait is much more natural though and when on flowing water i often use a small bait dropper. Once the bed of groundbait is out, cast into the flow and allow the float to trickle down Use hemp and small pellets as these are heavier than maggots and casters

thanks for all answers great help. ended up using pole but as said got more bites letting float go with flow or just a bit slower!! enjoy using waggler rod sometimes can just sit and relax!!
