Hiya Forum,

May I ask what material would be better to fish over rough ground with, using a pulley pennel rig, a 60lb tapered shockleader, 170 gram lead, and a 15ft emcast fixed spool rod please.


I am debating over these two items :


, 30lb braid


and,


,18lb mono

In my (limited) experience, and I have fished with both, braid is better for bite detection and the lack of stretch does put you in more direct contact with the fish, but over rough ground it does have a tendancy to become frayed and then, with no indication, give way on the retrieve, even when not snagged.

I agree and the braid digs into the mono shock leader so the shock leader knot is then weaker

If your braid is cutting you leader fella you aint using the proper knot for the job try a modified albright that will solve your problem dont know anyone who"s had a failiure through it yet not one i use it boat fishing too & have never had it cut the mono pull for a break you always get the braid + some leader back every time

I have got to admit my shocky knots are not the best but a behn said braid is pricey

it is but outlasts mono by years .braid is ideal for spinning and boat fishing

Yea as there is no stretch so you are in contact with bait/artificals. But you dont need to use a shock leeder with the two methods you have mentioned

some people still put a small section of 40lb leader on for spinning[/quote]


You can but not neccesery if fishing with a light rod

the small section of leader used for plugging & spinning is to keep your trebles from damaging your braid should you experience any tangling
