Fished there last night for a big blank and 8 lost rigs and I was fisin the better part from the info I was given.

We started just after 6 for a high just before 10pm I counted 12 rods out in total. The count before we left was my mate had a small dab and another group had a small codling and large whiting that was just before 11.30.

I would,nt bother trying to fish the ebb there , on anything but the smallest tides it,s way to strong , my mate had 4 takers there on the flood yesterday mornin [sat], but I,ve just spoke to joe whose out there now with deg,s and kev , and it,s really quiet with only smallish fish showin , but it can be like that with shoals comin thru every now and again giving 20 minutes of hectic action then 2 hours biteless

It aint too bad snag wise as long as you cast to about 2-6 oclock (with 12 been straight across the river) - putting a 6 oclock cast right against the wall running perpendicular to the mersey.

Other rule, if your lead aint holding bottom you will guarenteed get snagged - soon as it bounces loose reel the thing in.

Finally agree with last poster, as soon as the ebb starts, even on mid size tide it is murder - flow is being funnelled. Only option is to stick one at about 4 oclock - ie within the protection of the perpendicular wall.

On the flood its more forgving because you are at least being dragged onto clearer ground and you lead gets swung around out of the current.

me and degs fished it sunday night. i had 6 small codling and degs a small y/ting. caught all mine on fresh blow lug. i fished with a hyflex with a speedmaster on with 25lb line and 80lb leader. single hook pulley's and fixed wire grippers and never lost a thing.

I use the fixed " blue wire grippers " in the gemini range.They hold well,but bend out of a snag.

Aye, other advantage with fix wires is even if they do slip a bit they carry on being able to grip. When the standard grippers pull out good chance they will bounce until they hit a proper snag.

The fixed ones are fine for fishing in deep water and off proms/piers etc, but if the water is shallow then they are a pain to reel in. Because they get snagged, pulled loose, snagged again, pulled loose during the retrieve you are more likely to get snagged from the rest of the gear trailing behind - ie your hooks. Option then is do you want to add a lead lift.

Suddenly you are fishing with £2.50 worth of gear at the end of your line, thats assuming you cast the gemini's yourself.

Its a matter of opinion, I fish here with plain leads (no grippers) on a rotten bottom. Cast in and allow the lead to find a snag (they always do here). Might lose the odd lead but you'll get your rigs and most importantly your fish back. Need good hooks which will bend rather than snap and check they're sharp after every cast. Also use strong line at least 25lb and a good shockleader to haul the fish up the wall. A drop net can be useful if you hook a decent cod too. Don't be afraid to lose some gear, the fish are there because of the underwater structure, not in spite of it.

I personaly use the main line and just tie a granny knot in the middle and works fine for me

Yeah i use 25lb main line, 50lb shockleader and rig body and a weak 6 inch link of 12lb attached to the lead. I use the 'Gemini Genie rotton bottom clips' available in all good tackle shops (and some rubbish ones too). This enables you to be able to cast safely but when the clip impacts with the water, the lead is ejected by the clip due to water pressure and you are then only attached to the lead by a short link of weaker line. Spot on mate, thats what we do

dont make any difference if your dad uses that set up ben his always snaps at the reel
