Oglet 11th Aug

Just wondering if I did anything wrong at Oglet the other night! Was first time fishing there so any advice welcome. High tide was showing as 9.20pm so me and the lad started fishing at the tower at 7pm with size 2 two hook beaded flapper rigs with rag/mak and 3oz free weights. Moved to the left on the grass after 2hrs. Absolutely plagued by crabs, stripping bait within 5 mins throughout the whole session and actually hooked about 10 of the little buggers. Had 3 rods out but completely blanked without a proper bite all night (Fished one at 20yds, one at 50yds and one aprox 100yds out) The tidal flow wasn't moving the rigs around, so that surprised me being an estuary. Left at 11.20pm and tide was still rising?!! (Do estuaries continue to flood after the predicted high tide time.... or have I read it wrong?!!! ) Was using 15lb hook line and had it cleanly cut 3 times as if it had been scissored! (Super crabs?) Very boggy/muddy location and will only be fishing 1 hour before high in future.

I don,t know anything about this mark mate but with it being an estuary mark I would,nt bother with anything but peeler as bait until about november .,

Cheers for that, I had wondered if crabs would eat peeler baits. Problem is, they're expensive to buy and I've never had much luck finding them when I go searching. However many stones I turn over and seaweed I search through all I seem to find are hardbacks (yes, I do the second leg test) .

Feel free to PM me a secret peeler finding location and I'll keep it to myself!!!!

Regards the tidal flow. First of all you had the time wrong. The table quotes 2139 hrs, but you have to add the hour for Summer Time so it was 2239.. there`s an hour adrift straight away.

Then you have to take into account that the predicted time is for Gladstone Dock, which is almost 10 miles away, so the rising tide has to travel 10 miles down river before there`s any difference at Oglet.

I`d be tempted to add half an hour but as I`ve never fished there I couldn`t swear to it. But you deffo forgot to add the hour. We`ve all done it lol

What an idiot. No wonder I was up to my b*lls in smelly mud!

I'd run out of bait by the time it would've been peak fishing time Can't see that the crabs would have stopped eating though, they were on a mission that night.

Maybe I'll give it another go then

Think I'll try spike island, widnes next time. Bit closer for me and minus the mud to get stuck in!
