Size of weight from rock & beach

Post by molehill »

Hi Guy's...... Me again.

Thanks to some sound advice from some of you, I am now sorted with my lines in terms of make and breaking strain. I have gone with 60lb sufix tritanium on reel, 60lb ultima powerflex for shock, 50lb Sakuma rig and 25lb amnesia snoods. No plans to break any long distance casting records, since my experience as only been up-tiding in the Blackwater down off Essex from boat... last outing was 15 years ago!

Which brings me to the point of this post..... Can anyone please advice on the sort of weight size I should use from beach and or from rocks. Would you go with break-aways? Would the pulley system over rocks best option and something like a 2 hook flapper over sandy areas?

Any  suitable advice  would be much appreciated.

Cheers

You should be using 15 to 30lb line on your reel. Most use 18lb on fixed spools and then the 60lb shockleader tied to the main line. You can use tappered shockleader which go from about 16lb to 60lb.
I use tapered myself and join the mainline and shockleader with a blood knot back to back http://www.netknots.com/html/blood_knot.html
The tapered leade has a smaller knot so it goes through the eyes better and if you get weed on the line I find it is less likely to get caught in the top eye.
I like the Daiwa sensor line in 18lb for the main line as it is very anti abrasive but it is up to you.
If you are over head thumping off the rocks then you could go with 30lb straight through but for power casts you will need a shockleader.
Hope this helps :bored:

I normally use around 100g. Anything from 90g to 150g will work depending on the tidal pull.
Pumped some worms, caught some fish, and snapped some lines!

I think the 60lb reel line will be a typo......5oz or 6oz breakaways will prob be the norm for most situations. Fixed grips are hard work but necessary on some marks at various stages of the tide....wrap an elastic band around the legs of a breakaway to make an impromptu fixed gripper. You can often get away with lighter leads on open beaches where there`s less tidal run than in and around estuaries. If i fish somewhere like Pensarn in daylight,i`ll use 2 rods, one with a 5oz breakaway and one with a 3,4,or 5oz plain bomb so that the tide can move the rig until it settles by a feature/hole e.t.c where natural bait will end up and hopefully the fish will follow. What often happens is you`ll get a good belt on the bomb rig and miss the fish, leaving you thinking if you had a breakaway on,creating a bolt rig, that you would have hooked it....then again the natural drift of the bomb was prob what induced the bite in the first place....swings n roundabouts.
As for rocks there`s two schools of thought....if the ground is rocky then a plain lead will be less likely to get snagged up,though the hooks e.t.c will still get caught up.....on the other hand a breakaway will be less likely to roll on the bottom....you pays your money and takes your choice.

Cheers Kev, Some really useful tips there. I am not sure about the rubber band tip though ..... Am I right in assuming that you attach the band around the wires in their normal fixed position? Or do you mean with the held back in a bunch with the band?

Gotcha Steve.

 Fixed grips? Are these the beads that are fitted to the wire breakaway's? Do you mean these beads should be removed or the wires stretched out a little to loosen their grip and held in place with a rubber band?

You can wrap the elastic band around any type of lead where the grips can break out.
