Perch Rock smooth hound sessions

First report after re-joining the Wirral sea fishing forum again / This time under a different user name.

So with getting older now and the Welsh trips to rock and beach venues getting harder and harder with either long slow traveling times and the cost
of everything that goes along with the fishing trips.
I had decided awhile a go to fish a lot more local and see what's on offer from the numerus low water place I can fish local to me.
And in all honesty the fishing local for me on the Wirral can be more consistent and I am able to do more fishing session with the time I have.
obviosity we don't have the verity that Wales has but we do have very good numbers of Smooth hound / Thornback Ray / and Plaice to fish for from a lot of venues .
For me its just a case of exploring different spots and fishing different size tides that can give you a good consistent fishing experience.

This post is about Perch Rock. on Saturday morning with a light south/east wind . I always find the River fishes well with an East wind ?
Pully rig used with a mixed verity of baits all taken confidently by the smooth hounds so no need for the USE OF PEELER CRAB.
Squid / Raw Prawn / Blow lug used.












I was going to give Saturday evening another go but the weather made a turn for the worst so sacked it .
Will do some more sessions during the week at Perch Rock and some other places I can fish the high water from but still stay down on the beach and see what they produce and fish like. Any questions ? i will give you a true and honest answer .

Great report and pics Brian. When you use king Prawn,do you bother shelling them or just bang them on as they are ?

Hi Mr Steve .
Bit of a long winded answer .
I do a big frozen sea bait order every year from online baits uk.
I get squid / sand eel - medium / launce - medium / large bluey.

As for prawn I just get the medium raw prawn from either Iceland or Aldi / both are a pick and mix 3 for £10.00 / raw prawn / cooked prawn / cooked shrimp .
Please note tiger prawns and the fresh water prawn are buoyant so if you have a long trace they will float up off the bottom .

I use the raw prawn as they come from the packet [shell on ] all I do is size them for the target fish .
IE either cut them in half down the length or across the middle of the prawn depending on what the target fish are and whether i want to add another bait like squid or fish bait.

I never pre bait hooks as I can do it quite fast plus I would rather keep any juices in the bait till actually casting the baited rig out / BUT I do oops all baits with a needle or the spikes of the grip lead so as to release all the cent when the bait hits the sea bed.

Good read and Photos Brian, its good to see somebody that does not worship at the altar of the holy Peeler Crab.

Many years ago I stopped using Peelers, as I live 60 odd miles from the sea obtaining them meant either having a bait collecting session which meant a 120 mile round tripat least, or buying them which at their price is a non starter.

I have found that Squid is a good bait that produces as many smoothies as does any other . I will certainly give the baits you suggest a go and see what the results are.

Huuum peeler crab I have had crab traps for most of my life .
And for me 80% of anglers are not even using the peeler crab they either buy or collect at their best stage ??? .
Soft backs or sponges as I call them out fish peeler anyway in my opinion.
But yes other baits will catch hounds . Bass . Cod .
And bait size is another miff .
A small neat bait will go some distance and catch any size fish .
My experience is fish a lot of times will shy away from a large size bait .
