Don't get too excited, I've been to Whitby
Decided to take a trip to the north east in search of some cod with my boys.
I decided on Whitby East pier. A venue I have never fished. The weather report didn't seem too bad but the small tides weren't ideal. I called at the local tackle shop in the town, hook line and sinker. Grabbed a couple of wraps of lug to accompany the squid and mussels I'd brought with me. I left the car in the carpark in front of the tackle shop and began the walk to the pier. The town looks lovely, I'll definitely make another trip with the whole family.
Once we made it closer to the water I could feel the wind picking up and when I saw the sea it was quite a shock
. Large breaking white waves probably stretching a 1/4 mile out further than the end of the pier, not what I was expecting. It was low tide when we arrived and there was nobody else there. I'd taken two rods, but with the conditions decided one would be enough.
I baited up a lug and mussel cocktail and sent it in. Not a powerful cast, just a decent lob.
The rod tip was all over the place with the massive push and pull of the waves as they came past. Impossible to see bites.
A couple of local lads turned up and set up to my feet at the very end of the pier. They said conditions weren't perfect but still fancied their chances of getting a few.
They were fishing with cart and peelers. It didn't take long before one of them had a codling. And not much later they were up to 4 between them. I'd only had a couple of knocks, and they could have been kelp brushing my line to be fair.
By this point I was fishing with my rod in my hand, it was easier to maintain constant pressure on my rig and I could feel every pluck on my gear.
One of the locals was chatting with me when I got my 1st proper little pull, then it started dropping slack, I lifted into the bite and fish on! At last! I was shortly greeted with my 1st codling of the season, and what a relief it was too.
The locals continued to get a couple more.
At high tide I decided to call it. It started raining (wasn't forecast to) and my lads were getting tired.
Apparently it fishes best from about an hour and a half up the down. As I was leaving more started arriving, typical.
Anyway, I was satisfied. A few more would have been nice, but it was still great to get one
