To Fish The Southern End (The Bay)

Cross over to the island via the Britannia Bridge and take the first exit (A4080) Newborough. Turn left opposite the Spar shop and go down the lane for about a mile. You will come to a toll gate that will cost you £2. Go through the barrier and follow the lane down to the car park (same car park as for Newborough & LLandwynn). Follow the path onto the beach. When you get on the beach look right and about a mile and a half away you will see Llandwynn Headland. Walk past Llandwynn (about a mile) and you will come to Malltreath Bay beyond it. It is a very shallow sloping sand beach and you will need to wade out to get deeper water. It is best fished on an in-coming tide with the wind coming in from the sea. Good for bass, plaice, dabs etc using live rag.

To Fish The Northern End (Malltreath Sands)

Follow the same route directions but continue through Newborough on the A4080 for about a mile to a small parking area in the last corner of the forest at Map Ref 411 671. From there follow the foot path about 250 metres down to the edge of the high water mark. You will be looking across an estuary. If you walk to the waters edge and then turn left towards the sea and fish anywhere along there you will get flat fish of all types especially to live rag or lug.


*The whole site (except the forest) is a National Nature Reserve managed by the Countryside Council for Wales. There is open access on beaches and estuaries but elsewhere access is restricted to marked footpaths or areas identified by signs as open areas. This includes Ynys Llanddwyn where some coves are closed to the public during the bird-breeding season, April to August. No dogs are permitted on Ynys Llanddwyn from May to Sept. Elsewhere dogs must be kept under control.
