Talacre Beach - 10/07/2006

Post by fairziff »

Iain and I were invited by Del to fish the Green Buoy at Talacre over low water.
Having studied his Admiralty Chart, Del's eye's nearly popped out of his head when he saw the depth of this low water channel. At it's deepest, it is 60ft down at low water. There are not many beach venues with this depth of water within easy casting range. Surely this place was full of fish!!!

We arrived at the venue and were deterred from parking at the flood plain car park by the sign that stated that the gates would be locked at 8pm. Instead, we opted for the nearby pub carpark.

We headed out to the right hand side green buoy. It took about 10 mins to reach the waters edge.

We fished 2 hours before to 2 hours after low. With this depth of water, we decided to cover all bases with a good variety of bait and rigs.
In all, we tried Lug, Mackerel, Peeler Crab, Sand Eel and combinations of all these.
Rigs used were 2 hook flappers (1/0 and 2/0), 4/0 Pennels, 2 hook clipdowns(2/0), 2/0 Hokki's, size 2 Shrimp Rigs and baited 4/0 Hokki's. You couldn't knock us for lack of effort!!!!
Iain noted that it took his 6oz sinker 5 seconds to reach the bottom after hitting the water. This was deep!!!

Fishing was slow. Very slow!!!!
For the 4 hours we were fishing, 4 trawlers were constantly zig zagging across this channel a few hundred yards to the east of us. Word has it that they have been hoovering up this venue for months now. Not the best sight for any shore fisherman to witness right in front of them.

To brighten the mood, a seal decided to have a nap on the beach right by us. Iain's bird watching stealth was evident as he got within 12ft of him to snap a few pics.

We ended up with 2 small dabs for our efforts.

Not the fish-fest we were hoping for but enjoyable nonetheless.
Definately a venue I will be revisiting.

Make sure you don't go there if the wind is blowing along or across the beach, it's like fishing in a sandblaster :D It does seem like that place should fish better than it does, all I've ever had there is dabs and dogs.

I was fishing size 2s on one rig same result as all the others - bait stripped in a very short time - often less than 5 minutes.

You don't like walking do you LJ? I seem to remember you not being too impressed that night the big fellah dragged you out to the beach near Hilbre Island just after you'd started

Nice report and pictures. Always good to see new areas and put faces to names.
As for the trawlers, its about time they were restricted to at least half mile from the low water marks. Many years ago at Dinas Dinlle I managed to hit one of two trawlers fishing in tandem with a pebble off the beach. In hindsight I suppose I could have been charged with damage but the frustration of watching them clean up just yards from the shore was too much. Makes you wonder, if my line was in the water first and they broke it, would they be liable to compensate me for loss of terminal tackle ???
why are the big fish always caught the day BEFORE I get there :-(

Great Report guys....................Shame the fish weren't really there..

Been there (at Vale park). The bass-turds just laughed at us so I lobbed a plain bomb and smashed his cabin window. He was very sheepish on the way back a while later and actually threw my mates tackle back to us (or maybe AT us?).

Must mean they've emptied the Dee then......''

Been at there non-stop since March - no fish left so coming to a beach near you.

Take their id numbers and report them to the Fisheries - I have been - not saying they'll do anything - in my experience they won't, but at least I feel I'm having a go back.''

Seems to have gone up since the cockling's been more regulated in the Dee - the wildlife rapists have moved on maybe.':x'

Bill Lindfield had an article in the Sea Dangler recently saying how good Caldy used to be until the appearance of these clowns - then went on to say how c**p it is now. There was even a trawler in the background of his action fishing pose...':('

Used to just be little blacked out boats at night - illegal of course - has somebody licenced these bu**ers???? or are they just brazen fatherless children.......

Happy lead lashing lads - they don't own the sea - we all do
He's back - who needs a whole liver anyway !

:( :( Very worrying!!!! You would hope the fisheries board would want a substainable source of fish, however this would mean regulating what the trawlers take and that costs money. If the trawlers continue to take what they want I fear their will be little left to spawn and maintain the stock level. Still, if they've got a license what can be done ????
I don't know how big it was, but.....

The North Wales & North West Sea Fisheries Committee are responsible for any policing of fisheries round here and they are NOT interested. As far as they are concerned trawling is insignificant in their area, the only important fisheries are for shellfish.
http://www.nwnwsfc.org/fisheries/fisheries_text.htm
In the Dee estuary the Environment Agency is now responsible and they frankly don't give a monkey's about sea fish either as long as the salmon and sea trout are left alone. I believe that at this moment in time there is actually NOBODY policing this fishery because the EA have no-one trained up to do it! In any case the regulations allow boats under 10m to trawl as many baby flounders as they want because they don't have to report (and actually refuse to report) their catches and there is no size limit on flounders. I haven't fished Caldy this year and I used to fish there a lot, it just isn't worth wasting bait.

if you need to report something wrong, just ring them and tell them that you have seen illegal cockel pickers... they would soon be out there.
