If members are planning a sea angling holiday in South East Ireland the following information may prove useful.
The south east counties of Wicklow and Wexford are home to some of the best and most varied sea angling in Ireland. Shore angling consistently produces Bass, Smooth Hound, Mullet, and Flounder to specimen size. Tope are a prospect from south facing beaches, as are Ray.
Shore venues vary from sandy surf beaches (east facing) to steep to shingle banks (south facing). Long casting may be required on the east facing beaches such as Morriscastle or Tinnebearna, while a forty meter lob can be quite sufficient on the south facing shingle beaches. On all beaches evening into night is best.
Lugworm is essential on Wexford’s south facing beaches.
If lure fishing for Bass contact Wexford town based Bass angling Guru Jim Hendrick. Check out his fine website www.bassfishing.ie. Lure fishing is practiced from various rocky headlands and estuary mouths which are subject to strong tidal conditions. Bass on these marks average 3+kgs. Bass have been protected in Ireland since 1990 when commercial fishing was halted.
The fishing harbour of Kilmore Quay is designated an angling centre of excellence. The local charter fleet fishes the reefs off the Saltee Islands for Pollack, Codling, Ling, Wrasse, Pouting, Conger, Tope, and Bass.
