Thurstaston for a novice

I am a complete novice to fishing - I've read the books now I need to do it.

I will be camping at Thurstaston 29 may to 03 June and would like to try my hand at fishing with my 12 year old granddaughter. Is there anywhere, safe with easy ish access nearby that would keep us occupied for a couple of hours.
What gear and bait would I need and best day/time to fish.

I was thinking my granddaughter would like spinning for bass or whatever with a light spinning rod.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Can bait be dug, crabs caught there?

You can get down on to the beach via the set of steps which are about 300 yards to to the left of the visitor centre.You can fish 2 hours before high and 2 hours after.Not much chance for bass spinning.Best baits would be crab or ragworm tipped wth mack.
