big baits for mersey cod

hi all

still new to sea fishing and iam looking for some advice as to what baits i should be looking at to catch cod and hopefully not get murdered by whiting

have had a few cod using lug and squid on pennel rigs size 2-0 hooks ..also caught on lug and crab on same rig to still getting whiting though

so am i pointing in the right direction ? should i step up the hook and bait size ?

also what other baits will work well ?

Get 2 or 3 black lug, fold in 2, add a couple of blow lug if using frozen blacks and mummify into a thick chunky sausage about 4" long and 1.5" diameter. (gottabe a knob joke in there somewhere). Thread onto a 5/0 pennel. I fold the lug in 2 to prevent the bait from being too long when using a pennel rig because the pennel hook re-hooks the bait at the bottom.

I guess the other thing is venue choice. Some places produce more whiting than others.

And state of tide. Slack water = whiting city. Mid tide = cod city.

big baits are not always needed try a pennel rig with a small hook ie 4s and a 3/0 small bait on the 4s and just nick the bait with your
3/0 hook a small whitting and leave it in small fish catch bigger fish it does work
