Fishing and Camping in North Wales

Hi there fellow anglers. I am John.I used to go fishing in Abersoch in my father’s boat when i was 30yrs younger. Now I would like to take my mate and his kids as well as my nephews out there and do the same. Can anyone recommend me a decent camp site and any information about using a inflatable dinghy. I have a 13ft inflatable dinghy with a 15hp Evinrude engine. all the necessary equipment for the boat and all my fishing tackle (rods, reels, feathers , hand lines, spinners etc), as well as all the safety equipment for the boat and vhf radio.
I was wondering what it costs to stay out there for a long weekend and what the prospects are of taking the boat out (launch free of charge if poss.) and catching some decent fish even if it is just mackerel for the teenagers.

John. I was out on Iank's boat on Tuesday.Its 28ft.There was a gentle 8-10mph wind blowing and it was a bit bumpy.I would not go out in a 13ft dinghy at Abersoch unless the sea was as flat and still as Millsy's wallet.Just my thoughts.

Hi John

Theres not many places on the Llyn where you will find a free launch. Most, like Nefyn and Morfa Nefyn are council run and i think you now need to register and provide proof of at least 3rd party insurance.

The only place that i know where you can launch for free is Porth Ysgaden, its a bit of a rough track onto the beach. Most people use 4x4s or tractors but ive launched a 4m zodiac inflateable with a car there by towing it in reverse down the track and then manually getting it into the water (ok if theres 2 of you). Its probably worth a look before you try. Its no good with a strong westerley as it blows into the bay. There is some good fishing to be had about 1/2 to 1 mile off Porth Ysgaden (again if you have a look first you will see the line where other boats drift to give you an idea of where to fish) but watch the weather as there are some tricky currents betweem Porth Ysgaden and Towyn.

You can launch in Abersoch if you go down the road by the golf course,( on the left on the road out towards Sarn Bach about 1/2 mile after the shops) but not sure of the prices etc as ive not been out from there for a number of years. For Abersoch avoid any winds from the south or east but as Steve said it does get a lumpy with winds from any direction. If you are just looking for mackeral try down the right of the bay (looking out to sea) between the island and mainland but again be selective about conditions and dont be worried to call it off if in doubt.

As for campsites there are lots around Abersoch but i stay on the other side of the Llyn where its not as busy. There are quite a few sites around the Tudweiliog area and if you wanted to go that way i could point out a couple. I think the place i stay at charges about £12 /night

I have launched from Aberdaron but it was quite soft sand. It should be ok with a light inflateable that you can manhandle if there is a couple of you.

Be very wary of going out of the bay to the right hand side (looking out to sea, between Bardsey and the mainland) in anything but the best weather as you can get some pretty serious wind against tide situations.
