Longest Fish Pool - Graeme Darlington........48cm Codling (£16)
Round 6 saw us back at Otterspool promenade, this time on the stretch between the adventure playground and the G6 red buoy. Despite some dubious weather forecasts the morning was a pleasant one if not a little bit on the nippy side. As we made our way down to get set up we were greeted with a lovely winter sunrise..................
We got underway at 09:00 and with it being a bigger tide it was already pulling like a train. Hopes were high of finding the Codling early as is normally the way at this venue. First fish over the rail honours were shared between Mark Davies with a small Codling of 30cm taken on his first cast and Dale Edwards with a better 45cm fish on his......................
After those two early fish hopes were high for the rest of us however the next two hours were a war of attrition for everyone without a single bite being seen or fish being taken. There was a lot of debris in the form of grass, weed and the other usual pleasantries which made holding bottom and retrieving realty difficult.
Around 11:30 however, it was like somebody flicked a switch. At 90 minutes before high water, the run had now slackened off. I was furthest down river and a cracking bite resulted in this clean run fish of 46cm........................
Maerig to my left was then into one too taking this 42cm fish....................
There was clearly a shoal of Codling passing through as Ste Atkinson was also into a fish however unfortunately for Ste, as he tried to hand line it up, the line rubbed against the wall and parted ways.
Mark Davies was then into his second Codling of the match and it was a better fish, much fatter than the others and measured 47cm on the tape..................
On closer inspection it could be seen that Mark had in fact hooked a pin Whiting first and the Codling had been hooked as a result of trying to take the Whiting.........................
I managed to take another two Codling on my next two casts but could not improve on my 46cm fish, Mark Davies then also took his third of the match which was again another 47cm fish, however the best fish of the match was taken by Graeme Darlington measuring 48cm and was enough for him to take the longest fish pool on the day.
As we approached high water the Codling gave way to the Whiting who came onto the feed and with the leaders on Codling of 48cm, 47cm, 46cm and 45cm it was going to come down to who could find a better Whiting for the overall win. There were some cracking Whiting about too, Peter Dowd with the best of them with this 37cm fish....................
Graeme Darlington could only find a 28cm fish which would leave him just outside the top three. 31cm was my best effort which was enough to give me third place on the day. Dale Edwards found a 33cm Whiting which was enough to give him second place but it would be Mark Davies who would again take the match win with a 33cm Whiting to go with his 47cm Codling to give him a very good total of 80cm.
After we had done the results we then got down to the even more serious business of the Secret Santa prize draw......................
