Mostyn 19th Feb

Small high tide of c6.9m at 19.45 saw me headed to Mostyn ship end. Was on location at peg #4 at 5, tide was so small that I had 20+ mtrs of mud in front of me which didn't fill until an hour before high.

Two rods, ray bait of squid/bluey on one, worm and prawn on the other. Pair of whiting on the worm/prawn on first chuck. On the ray rod a good pull down followed by slack line was met with a good fight, felt like a ray. Got it half way in and and it just stopped, snag I thought so tried to pull out and lost the lot!

New shock leader etc and the ray rod relaunched. Big bite on the prawn/worm rod and exactly the same, half way in went solid and snapped. (Just for interest I've had more rays at Mostyn on prawn than on anything else)

Was only out for a short one, and couldn't face the prospect of hooking and losing another fish (and couldn't be bothered to move!) so headed home.

On reflection on the way home I wondered if I had really snagged, or if the fish had just hunkered down on a muddy bank?

In any event, next time I'll be using stronger line (was on 16lb, have a reel spooled with 25lb) and a rotten bottom, and trying waiting patiently for a bit if I got stuck with what I think is a ray there. I'd also look for 7.5-8 mtrs tide so there's enough water but the pull's not too strong.

Three other lads right by the ship, they had had a few whiting and one ray when I left at around 19.30.

I use 20 -22lb main line every where have done for years have never seen any benefit in going less / I fully understand others use lighter line for distance ? but where I fish distance is never a problem .
