birkenhead docks

i was wondering if birkenhead docks are a good fishing spot and if so, what fish is there to be caught?

you can catch the usual suspects whiting eels but you can catch mullet on bread where the ship is half sunk if you are lucky and on a sunny day

I tried it about 10 days ago, did about 2 hours at night, not a nibble.

When I fished there with Big Derek, I was fishing close in on baited hokais, I was getting a bite a drop, was fishing straight down.

Big Derek was getting lots of bites and decent sized whitings with a standard lob towards the middle of the dock.

This continued for a couple of hours, bite a cast, plenty of fish, mainly whiting and pouting, then suddenly and simultaneously, bites stopped for both of us and we could not get another bite for about 2 hours, so we went home.

We have no idea what happened, but close in and at middle distance the fish just stopped feeding in unison.

Guess that is why we call it 'Fishing' and not 'Catching' as it is a fustrating hobby sometimes.

duke street bridge used to be okay for whiting codling and pouting and even had a small coalie on hokai's the penny bridge was good until they filled it in but were the pumps are over the road from the sunken boat is supposed to hold some better fish i've been told but never fished by there myself, but loads of polish have started fishing by duke street now and taking every thing they were taking small whiting while i was there practice casting and i said what are ya taking them for they're to small to eat he replied no no not just one we take lot's and cook them all together

Tell the Polish swine thats not how we do things in the UK

They see nothing wrong with taking everything they catch regardless of size,just as they do in their homeland.

We have the same problem on our local rivers,the free stretches are being raped by the Poles.

If they are not challenged by anglers or members of the public when they are taking small fish,they dont think they're doing anything wrong and will continue to do so.

Its a different culture regard fishing, Poland...that is. The EA have only just started to but multi langauge signs up locally about not taking fish ( course fish). There's a local lake that they took some of the carp from that were probably older than me! For years I have watched those monsters bask in the sun and they have always been there, there's still one or two - but not as many.

The EA have now clamped down on fishing at this 'lake' but I fear some of the best fish have already been stolen for other fisheries or for food.

You can imagine if you cant get them to see its wrong to eat course fish, how hard it will be to educate them regard undersize sea fish.

I caught a few Whiting at a place that were undersize and two died being unhooked. I admit - I took them for bait and cat etc, but if they lived I wouldnt.

The dock joining the old pump dock (the one with the half sunken boat and the big floating dock gate can produce silver eels and whiting at this time of year. I went with my young nephew a few weeks back and he caught 6 small whiting just over the side and i was casting out my new rod a nd reel into the middle and blanked. But I say to my self ,whats the fun in reeling in a tiddler with a few turns of the handle
Just don't tell the Poles or they will take all the littluns and make some skanky polish dish!

i wudnt dare tell them. they just dont know what they are doing to the sport. cheers anyway i mite give that a try soon.
