sea fishing fs reels are pretty tough ;) . You prob only have sand in the reel. just rinse under the tap with semi warm water that should get rid of the sand if thats what it is then spray WD 40 inside the reel to lubricate and prevent rusting ;)

A quick point - WD40 is great for cleaning and flushing out muck and grit, but if you spray the shaft / bearings with WD40 it will dilute or wash away any oil or grease so you`d be as well to lubricate properly afterwards. I think I`m right in this ;)

Tommy if it is spotlessly clean inside,it could just be that a component is worn and needs replacing.I don't think Pete Coogan does Penn reels, only Abu's.

I'd have thought Pete would know what to do with it. If not I think there's the details of a Penn service shop on here.

Totally dismantle the reel. Clean with WD40 if corroded and then with very soaped hot water then reassemble with plenty of grease in the right places. If the noise is still the remove the spool and try again, then remove the bail arm rotor. I guess it could be a bent rotor shaft.

Is it smooth turning and just making a noise or is there a stiff spot?

mine did that soon after I got it, the worm gear had broken. Cheap to fix but a pain it happened. (Ewen Hill sorted the part for me, was a few quid, he used to be the reel techy at Penn before pure fishing took over)
