Has anyone ever fished on Hilbre Island ??. An artical in Wirral Globe says thay can't find a hermit sorry warden to take on the job of ?????? as there is no lecky or water supply. While the cats away ????.

i've fished there a couple of times in the summer, a few years back though. fished facing the mainland into the big gulley. took a few nice plaice. no idea how it would fish this time of year but certainly worth a try

The report is wrong.

The Head Ranger was interviewed on Radio Merseyside and was a bit miffed that the press got it wrong.
It`s true there won`t be a live-in ranger/caretaker but it`s just because the present one is leaving and they don`t want to replace him. Instead it`s going to be maintained by The Friends Of Hilbre and various Ornithology groups (twitchers). They`ll be taking turns keeping an eye on it from the mainland.

It`s a nature reserve so you`re not really supposed to fish it, and can be asked to leave.

There is electricity on the island provided by a small wind farm and solar generators (not much use round here I shouldn`t think). Not sure about water - probably have to use bottled.

I take it it would be hw venue? if so you would have to wait till the tide went out again. It could be a very long day if there are no fishies about.

Don't think I will be asked to leave the island at high tide. I had thought of fishing at the north end, faceing the Irish sea April /Sept looking for Mr Bass.

You will end up foulhooking seals each cast You need to fly over the island to realise how big the colony is.Given the fact that seals have to eat about 10 kilos each day,I doubt if any self respecting fish goes near the place Anyway take a pair of Bino's with you you can always watch the birds.

i think it`s now illegal to fish off there,,,it was a main sanctuary for the teal population ,amongst others,,,,,they still have a law protecting them,,the Statute for the Hilbre Island Teal Existance,,,,,,,,otherwise known as.............

I had a go a plugging for bass last summer. 1st to the east of the island (legal if you're not standing on the island). I waded out to my chest and was met by a couple of seals wondering WTF I was doing on their patch.

Had a go on the end of the island and was very politely asked to stop fishing by the nice Ranger man because it's a nature reserve and that someone previously got their rod ripped out of their hands when they hooked a seal.

If it's bass you want then Hoyle Bank is your best bet.
(Get your fill because it could be out of bounds by 2012.)
