Proposed Marine Conservation Zones For North Wales.

Have you heard the latest news from the Welsh Assembly Goverment, they are proposing to designate some of our favourite fishing spots and bait collecting areas as marine conservation zones. To see the propsed sites visit wales.gov.uk. There is a consultation period that lasts until 31st July 2012. Everyone needs to act and organize against these proposals, otherwise you can say good-bye to sea fishing in North Wales.

Nowt like being over-dramatic.

There are currently 10 sites being considered as MCZ of which 3-4 might become MCZ's

Of these 10, 6 are in North Wales, comprising, from a shore angling/bait collection perspective - 2 miles of coast at Pwllheli, 5 miles of coast at Morfa, 2 miles of coast at Criccieth,600 yards of coast at Penmon Point, 2 miles of coast North East of Beaumaris and a couple of offshore islands.

I guess there is more potential loss for boat anglers and commercials, but out of the ones mentioned above, it could be only 3 or less that get designation, at the very worst case all 4 might be in North Wales and we lose 4 of the 5 bits of coastline I have mentioned.

It's still a long way off saying goodbye to sea-angling in North Wales.

If we cannot give up a few miles of coastline in the name of conservation, then it is a sad state of affairs and our sport is only going to decline, if we can't see that preserving a tiny bit of our islands coast is actually, not a bad idea, there are still plenty of places left to fish and get bait from -- who knows having nursery areas and conservation areas might bring in lots more fish to the surrounding beaches/rocks.
