IS IT ME OR THE REELS

Post by congerman1962 »

I have x2 DAIWA SL20SH POWER DRIVE reels I use these on my century flattie for my close in bass work (up to 80 yards ) I have had these for about 5yrs now + there still like new I have had a lot of problems with these reels bird nesting I use to use 10-12lb f1 on them but last week I upped the line to 18lb daiwa I thought this would solve the birds nesting and it did but yesterday it birds nested again and cracked of has any one els had this problem it only happens every now + then but in my eyes that's to much I use multipliers for all my fishing and have no problems with my abu reels (unless its my fault) on my sloshes I noticed that when laying the line on the reel if you let the line go to each end of the spool it seems to fall back to the inside and maybe its getting trapped this is my thoughts I would appreciate your ideas and suggestions how to combat the problem without selling them

How are they on other rods?

Wouldn't have thought the line lay would be causing much of a problem unless maybe you are building up a hump near the edge of the spool and then laying the line into the "V" that forms when you don't fill the spool fully side to side.

Check the brakes if they are running too fast.

I'll buy one off you if you don't sort it. :D

Sloshs seem a touch over kill for close in bass fishing

Its probably abit of both, if your only fishing close in Im guessing your just giving it a little flick out, multis dont tend to like this... especially those with out mags to control the spool to stop it getting out of control. You could try slow the reel down with thicker oils and fit the bigger brake blocks.

Also If your giving it a little flick then most people tend to leave casting technique behind as they feel its not needed, well a snatchy cast is always going to cause problems so even if your smooth sending a 3 hook flapper of dab baits into the horizon with your abus and a beach caster, you may still be snatching at a 50 yard cast. If your only casting 50 yards you can afford to cast almost comically slow ;)
