You will be lucky to get any fresh crab in the tackle shops at this time of year.Lads who have their own traps will get a few.I think you will have to find a contact in Devon as that seems to be the place where they peel all year because it is warmer.Try using mussel,a very good substitute.

Still a few peeling down the Llyn, if you know where to look, but I doubt you'll find anyone selling fresh or frozen locally.

the second peel never happened this year. was only a couple at a time.
there still peeling in the water I had some softies in my push net 2 weeks ago. if you can get any fresh uncooked shrimp anywere its even better this time of year.

Might try to fashion a push net out of an old carp net and give it a try at ainsdale when next go pumping

If you do that keep the shrimp as well . Great bait and another good alternative to crab. Turn them into a mush and put them on the hook with a baiting tool and cottton

I remember reading about it in sea angler the other year so made one of those tools from a nozzle for tube of silicone, but never got round to using it.

Do you need to keep them alive or would they be ok in fridge for a couple of days

if you put them in a bucket with an aerator they'll last about a day. I find they last longer if you wrap them in a wet cloth (salt water) and pop um in the fridge some times they stay alive for a week.

What Joe said was good advice . Put them in a litter tray with a rag soaked in seawater and pop in the fridge. My eyes were opened to it when I was fishing in comps where crab was banned.. Joes mate , Wando McGill, was using live prawn mashed with Maddies and battering me on the codling. I know Heather and Bill used them in the same competition to good effect. While they may not be as effective as live crab they can still catch better than some frontline shop baits .

I read that the shrimp gets sticky when mashed but is it only suitable for a gentle lob or can you wack it out

With enough cotton I reckon you could whack it , but at otterspool the cod are usually within 60 yards of the wall

Push net mk1 complete, if doesn't fall apart and I catch few shrimp I'll post how I made it.
